Land Rover Defender 90
The first Land Rover model that would become the Defender was built in 1983. It was officially given the name “Defender” in 1990 and released for the U.S. market in 1993. Although the Defender officially began in the 80s and 90s, the first Land Rover Defender was actually based on military inspired Land Rover SUVs.
The original two-door Land Rover 90 was built in 1984, and from 1983-1990 was sold in the U.K. and elsewhere, but not yet in the states. In 1990, the Land Rover 90 was officially given the Defender nameplate. In 1993 the Defender 90 and 110 would go on sale in the United States. Unfortunately, in 1997 the Defender would leave the U.S. market once again but would continue to be sold elsewhere up until 2016.
The vehicle donated to Habitat for Humanity (pictured above) is a 1995 Land Rover Defender 90. The most notable differences between the Defender and previous Land Rover Series III model are the new grille style and longer bonnet. In addition, some internal features include permanent four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer gearbox, coil spring suspension, and more luxurious interior features.
