Today, we’re taking a look at a 1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia that was donated to KBIA through the Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program.
KBIA is mid-Missouri’s NPR station which serves as the region’s largest provider of arts programming. The station reaches more than 30,000 listeners per week and is one of the few remaining local news providers.
1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia donated to Car Talk
Volkswagen produced the Karmann Ghia in order to compete with other car manufacturers that produced sports cars. This ’71 model features a coupe convertible body with a yellow exterior.
More than 445,000 Karmann Ghia’s were produced in Germany from 1955 to 1974. The Karmann Ghia was designed with input from numerous individuals at Carrozzeria Ghia and was strongly influenced by Virgil Exner‘s work. Walter Dorwin Teague, an American industrial designer, included the Type 14 Karmann Ghia on his list of the world’s most beautifully designed products.
