Everyday Car Donation Wizard gets hundreds of questions about car donations. Questions about the donation process, tax deductions, pickup times and how much money goes back to our charity partners. Here is a list of the top questions Car Donation Wizard gets asked:
How easy is it to donate a vehicle?
Donating a vehicle is really easy! There are two ways for you to start the donation process. You can call one of our customer service representatives at 1-877-957-2277 and they can help you complete the donation form online, or you can complete the form online here.
What types of vehicles can I donate?
We accept trucks, motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles, trailers, and recreational vehicles. Boats and planes need to meet minimum criteria so call us before you begin the donation process.
Once I have completed my donation form, how long does it take for my car to be picked up?
Within 24-48 hours you will be contacted by a towing company to arrange a pickup. Your car will be picked up free of charge and you can either hand over the title to the tow driver or you can send it into our offices in Rhode Island, whichever works best for you.
What paperwork do I need to donate my vehicle?
Most states require that you have a clear title to the vehicle, but some states also require a notarized signature to complete the donation. You will receive an email from Car Donation Wizard with a state specific title example and instructions to help you transfer over your title to Advanced Remarketing Services, Inc. , authorized agent for all of the charities.
What if I don’t have the title to my vehicle?
If you cannot locate or have lost the certificate of title, give us a call and we can help you obtain the proper documentation. Certain states require the donor get a new title, while others may just require some paper work to be filled out. Our customer service representatives are trained in all 50 states and will be able to answer any of your questions.
Does the car have to be in running condition?
At Car Donation Wizard we take all types of vehicles, running, non-running, classics, and even end of life vehicles. The vehicle does however need to be in towing condition and have four inflated tires. For end of life vehicles we work with a network of nationwide licensed dismantlers and recyclers who will recycle your vehicle properly.
For more information about vehicle recycling, visit our environment page.
Do I need to be with the car when it gets picked up?
Once the you have received a pick up time, you do not have to be present for the actual pick up. The vehicle must be accessible for the the tow truck, and you will be notified when it has been picked up.
How does the tax write-off work?
Within two to three weeks of your car donation, your car will be sold either through our network of direct buyers or through an auction.
If your car sells for less than $500, you will be notified by one of our customer service representatives. You can take a tax deduction equal to the ‘fair market value’ of your donation up to $500. Fair Market Value is loosely explained as the “Blue Book” or “Guide Book” value of your vehicle.
If the vehicle sells for over $500 you will be given a written acknowledgement (receipt) including the amount the vehicle was sold for. This a requirement by the IRS. The receipt will include:
1) The gross selling price of the vehicle. If under $500 then you can declare ‘fair market value.’
2) The year, make, model, and Vin information
3) A statement that the vehicle was sold at arms length between two unrelated parties
4) And a statement that no goods or services were received in return for your donation
Regardless of the amount your car sells for, you need to call our offices in Rhode Island so that we can prepare your 1098c tax deduction form for your car donation.
For more information about tax deductions visit our tax information page.
