The Mind Body Awareness Project was founded in 2000 by a group of people who wanted to “bring transformative mindfulness and emotional intelligence practices into juvenile detention facilities around the Bay Area“. In 2006 and 2007, MBA merged with two non-profits that serve at-risk youth, Youth Horizons and Vision Youthz.
Today, MBA trains educators and youth service providers around the world. MBA provides weekly groups in San Mateo County Youth Services Center and Santa Cruz Juvenile Detention Center, as well as the adult Alameda County Jails.
Program Impact:
- Delivered mindfulness rehabilitation to over 7,000 incarcerated youth
- 64.5% of youth ages 15-18 say MBA groups helped them manage their emotions
- Reduced violent conflict by 28.4%
