How to Retire Your Vehicle
Step 1: Provide Vehicle Information
Fill out the intake form online or by calling (877) 957-2277. We’ll ask for some information about your car, including the VIN, year, make, model, mileage, and condition.
Step 2: Schedule Free Car Pick Up
Tell us where the car will be picked up. A local towing agent will contact you within 2-3 business days to schedule a pick up time most convenient for you.
Step 3: Receive a Tax Receipt
After your car is picked up, it will be sold to a licensed auto recycler. You’ll be emailed a tax receipt within 30 days of the vehicle sale.

What types of vehicles can be retired?
You can retire any running or non-running car! Trucks, motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles, trailers and RVs on a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions about a vehicle you’d like to retire, give us a call at (877) 957-2277!
Does the vehicle have to be registered in my name?
No, it does not. The name on the title and on the registration documents are often different. Contact our processing center at (877) 957-2277 for more information.
If there are 2 people listed on the title, do both need to sign?
Yes. Under most circumstances, both individuals must sign. However, if there is an ‘or’ in between the names, only one signature is required. Click here for state-specific title instructions.
What documentation will I receive?
When you recycle a car through the SHIFT Vehicle Retirement Initiative™, you’ll be emailed a tax receipt.
