Today’s car donation story features a 1982 Mercedes-Benz 380 that was donated to Habitat for Humanity through its Cars for Homes program. The donors shared the heartwarming story of “Maggie”, who started out as their neighbor’s dad’s car and eventually became the perfect ride for summer days.
The 380SL replaced the 450SL model and was produced from 1971 to 1989. It was based on the S-Class Benz that featured a shorter wheelbase, drop top, and two-door body. The smaller V8 was all-alloy instead of cast-iron which resulted in being a lot lighter. This benefited vehicle performance, fuel economy, and gained a four-speed automatic transmission. Due to its S-Class lineage, the 380SL has a limo feel to it, giving it a smooth and comfortable ride.

Maggie started out as our neighbor’s dad’s dream ride and he was able to enjoy driving the car around coastal Connecticut for many years. When he passed away after a full and happy life, Maggie went to his daughter and our neighbor, Yuki. Maggie came to live on the far eastern shore of Long Island. After a few years, Yuki came to the conclusion that she didn’t like the sun on her face. Before Yuki put the for sale sign on her, we snapped Maggie up and gave her a home.

I had retired and taken a job as a tennis pro at a local club. Maggie has been the perfect ride for driving to the beaches, shopping, summer dinners and showing up for work at the club. It’s the end of an era for us and we’re going to miss her. And yet, we are thrilled that our old car can be helpful to the good works of Habitat. See ya down the road, Maggie!
