January 16 is National Religious Freedom Day, a day meant to commemorate the Virginia General Assembly’s adoption of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786.
Freedom of Religion is protected under the Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stating that “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”
Under the Statute for Religious Freedom, the freedom to openly practice one’s faith without fear of being harassed, jailed or killed is guaranteed. Every person has equal rights to practice their religion and may change their religion without retribution.
