October 4 is World Animal Day, a day dedicated to improving animal welfare standards around the world. Heinrich Zimmermann, animal rights advocate, created the day in 1925 to promote the protection of all animals. He chose October 4 as it is the day of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.
