Louis Braille lost his vision after a childhood accident but remained a determined scholar. In 1824, at the age of 15, he created a system of reading and writing that uses raised dots in lieu of flat writing. His inspiration was a captain in Napoleon’s army, Charles Barbier. The army used a communication code called Night Writing, which Charles further developed and expanded.
From a young age, Louis changed the present and future of those with blindness or who are visually impaired. By 1916, Braille made its way to schools across the US, and has continued to grow. Even if you cannot read Braille, you’ve likely noticed it on signs, elevators, and ATMs.
The presence of Braille in the world today allows people with blindness to move more freely in the world. Braille encourages a greater degree of independence and accessibility.
